XornalIA

“Development, validation and transfer of an integrating platform of generative artificial intelligence solutions for media”

Project description

XornalIA is a research project aimed at the development, validation and transfer of an integrated generative artificial intelligence platform specifically designed for media organizations, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized newsrooms.

The proposal builds on a solid empirical foundation derived from previous research —especially the VALCOMM project— which has identified key technological needs in the sector through more than one hundred interviews with professionals in innovation, technology and content across international media organizations.

The project proposes the design of a modular tool that integrates generative AI solutions adapted to real journalistic workflows, aimed at automating routine tasks such as documentation, editing, verification and content adaptation, without compromising editorial control or professional standards.

Unlike general-purpose solutions, XornalIA is conceived as a specialized platform, trained under journalistic criteria and designed to integrate operationally into newsroom dynamics.

Problem addressed

The development of generative artificial intelligence in the media sector is creating a structural gap between large organizations with technological innovation capacity and small and medium-sized media outlets, which lack the resources to develop or adapt these solutions.

Previous research conducted by the team shows that most of these newsrooms do not have specialized technical staff or the financial capacity to implement their own AI systems, relying instead on external tools that are not tailored to their professional needs.

Furthermore, many existing solutions are focused on content generation or audience metrics optimization, rather than improving internal journalistic processes, where the greatest potential for efficiency lies.

XornalIA addresses this context by proposing a solution aimed at reducing this technological gap, facilitating access to advanced, adapted and sustainable tools designed specifically for journalistic work

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to develop and validate a generative artificial intelligence platform capable of automating key journalistic tasks, improving newsroom efficiency without compromising quality or editorial principles.

Specifically, the project aims to:

01

Analyze the current state of generative AI in media and identify opportunities for its application in professional routines

02

Identify tasks within the journalistic workflow that are suitable for automation

03

Design a modular architecture integrating specialized solutions for each function

04

Select and adapt the most appropriate AI models for each task

05

Train systems under editorial criteria and validate them in real newsroom environments

06

Ensure interoperability with existing newsroom technologies

07

Develop a usable, scalable interface adapted to different professional profiles.

08

Facilitate system transfer through a sustainable model oriented to real sector implementation.

Methodology and work plan

The project follows an applied and progressive methodology structured into four phases, combining empirical observation, technological design, real-world validation and transfer.

In the first phase, participant observation is conducted in media newsrooms to identify technological needs, operational frictions and tasks suitable for automation. This analysis is complemented by the study of advanced international experiences in the use of artificial intelligence in the media sector.

Based on this dual evidence, the conceptual architecture of the platform is designed, which is then developed in collaboration with a specialized technology provider. This phase defines modules, their functional integration and technical feasibility.

The third phase focuses on the functional development of the system and its testing in real media environments through an iterative process based on continuous professional feedback.

Finally, the project concludes with the consolidation of the prototype, its validation, legal protection and the design of a transfer strategy to the sector.

Innovation and contribution

XornalIA proposes an innovative approach to artificial intelligence in journalism, focused on optimizing internal production processes rather than solely on content generation.

The project stands out for developing a modular platform composed of specialized tools that automate specific tasks within the journalistic workflow, all integrated into a unified environment and adapted to editorial standards.

It also incorporates an applied approach based on direct newsroom observation and the transfer of knowledge from leading international experiences, ensuring that the solutions are aligned with real sector needs.

This combination of empirical research, technological development and real-world validation positions the project as an innovative contribution in both scientific and applied domains.
